Honorable HRD minister Kapil Sibal thinks that there is no need for Class 10th Board exam. The contention is that it causes stress and trauma to students and parents.
Mr. Sibal is not telling any alternative way of meeting objective of that exam, namely evaluating learnings/education imparted to students?
After all, the nation will benefit if education imparted to young generation is effective, and evaluating effectiveness is the purpose of exams.
The question I would like parents to ponder on is why a board exam causes stress and anxiety while a locally conduced exam does not?
I think the deficiency lies in structure of exams. These exams expect students to answer question in a very rigid fashion, thus testing the memory of the students, rather then testing their understanding of the subjects. The purpose of 10th Board exam is to evaluate learning against a common bench mark. In the light of privatization of education, this has become even more relevant.
I expect Mr. Sibal to provide thought leadership in this regard and help nation come up with a better way of evaluating learning, while minimizing the stress and trauma associated.
What Mr. Sibal is suggesting so far is that there is no need for evaluation of learning because student will generally continue in the same school after 10th standard. That logic seems to defy common sense.
