30% Youth Quota in Congress - TOI

Here is a news bite from Times of India that caught my attention today, Mahatma Gandhi's Martyrdom day. And mind you, this is the opening line on front page of the paper: "In a bid to woo young voters in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi pitched for 30% of the party tickets to be given to young candidates..."

I am bewildered. Whatever happened to sincerity? Can’t we just take a young man on face value? Why every statement, every move has to be seen with suspicious motives?

The news bite questions the motive, even before mentioning what the pitch was!

I would like to think that Mr. Gandhi's pitch for youth quota is driven by his sincere desire to promote young leadership in this country. While we have tons of "politicians", we lack "leaders". So, the way I see Mr. Rahul Gandhi's pitch is that he is doing politics to bring about a change that is dear to him, namely promoting young people to take leadership roles.

The debate can be on whether that is a desirable change, and if 30% quota is right means to achieve it. But you just can’t open the discussion by out rightly questioning the motive.
